I'm Sári, and I make my textile-based, beaded and felt accessories in Budapest.

I started a new jewellery line which is inspired by two countries of the Maghreb: Algeria and Morocco. The traditional Algerian wedding necklaces are made form small, triangle-shaped beads, made form a scented, plant-based black/brown paste which is dried. The necklace which is decorated with kitsch golden and plastic beads is used to fragrance the bride's clothing after the wedding ceremony. I took beads from such necklaces and created new ones, with colourful Moroccan kaftan beads and small pearls to transform them into modern, (scented!) MIMÓZA pieces.

During those Christmas holidays me with my boyfriend went to visit Budapest!

It was such an adventure! We decided not to take the plane and we opt for the train. We had dinner in Venice (that I’m sad to say it’s becoming a really sleazy city ) and than we left with an “EuroNight” train to the magyar capital and the next morning we were surrounded by the snow!

Budapest’s public transport company (BKV) certainly attracts its fair share of criticism. I would venture to say that the majority of this comes from the indigenous population rather than from visitors or foreigners living in the city, though tourists who have run foul of ticket inspectors for whatever reason, have their own stories to tell.

This is really a high quality content blog written with excellent English from a point of view of the people of Balkan. That's what makes the blog really exciting. Living in the (almost) neighbor country its always special because the neighbor is never exotic but rather competitive and to settle down there is sign of respect and interest which I find very nice.

12 City Project – Budapest Polaroid

Processing processing – that’s what’s going on here. Trying to get the best out of the Polaroids I’ve taken over the last year. Actually this project has given me a huge amount of material to work with – not just the Polaroid photos but also all the other images I shot while I was on my travels. I’m already starting to “cook” the project that I will do next year, but from now until the end of the year my goal is to have completed the work on all the city photographs and to have created some kind of finished format.

This Polaroid is of the Freedom Bridge over the Danube with the Gellert Hotel in the background.

In honor of Saint Stephen’s Day on August 20th, a national holiday in Hungary marking the state of the nation. I’ve decided to feature a posting of the top 10 Hungarian foods.

10. Bejgli

Bejgli is a sweet bread roll filled with poppy seeds, raisins and walnuts. It is most often prepared for holidays like Christmas and Easter.

9. Sour Cherry Soup

Cherries are abundant in Hungary during the hot summers. This cold soup is wonderfully refreshing and flavorful.

8. Winter Salami

You don’t have to be Hungarian to recognize this famous salami! Winter Salami can be found all around the world including at your local deli. The salami is based on a century old producing tradition from the city of Szeged. It is packed with flavor and cured to perfection.

7. Debreceni Sausage

Hungarians are serious meat eaters. There is no doubt Hungary is well-known for having excellent sausages which includes Debreceni. This flavorful treat was named after the Hungarian city of Debrecen. It contains pork that is spiced with paprika, garlic, pepper and marjoram.

6. Fisherman’s Soup

Fisherman’s Soup also known as Halászlé is a hot and spicy river fish soup. It is a favorite among locals and tourists especially around the Danube and Tisza river regions.

4. Dobos Torte

Stacked with several layers of chocolate buttercream and topped with a thin crust of caramel, Dobos Torte is a rich and elegant cake. It was invented by Hungarian confectioner József C. Dobosin in 1884. If your looking to indulge this is must have dessert!

3. Tokaji Wine

This sweet wine has a long and distinguished history. For centuries, it was the favorite among royalty such as Louis XIV of France, Gustav III, Peter the Great, and even great composers like Beethoven.

Tokaji Wine became the subject of the world’s first appellation control, established several decades before Port wine, and over 120 years before the classification of Bordeaux.

Today, it is still recognized as a highly esteemed wine and has won several international awards.

2. Chicken Paprikash

Tender chicken simmered in broth with onions and paprika then mixed with sour cream. A traditional Hungarian dish that is truly irresistible!

1. Goulash

There is no dish more known to Hungary than goulash. It is a staple in every Hungarian home. Although, it can be made in a variety of different ways, there’s no disagreeing that using fine ingredients like paprika is what makes goulash so great.

I finally began the research today. Surprisingly many facts have been forgotten, details changed and dates confused but the essence is still there….It doesn’t say anything about what I want this project to be but…

This project has been difficult for me from the start. It took me a week of hell to even begin this research. I decided I will do the journey on my own and so I needed to learn the details. But it is not about the facts. It’s how do you photograph a story that has been a giant weight on your shoulders your entire childhood? That has been the explanation for insanity? The measurement against which all other challenges have been placed? This FINAL project is actually about the present and time is running out.

Déryné Bistro - the trendy corner-spot

The petty exterior hides a very elegant, incoherent but stylish interior which I really like.

First of all there are coffee-house style tables at the entrance then a huge bar with bright colours and LCD TVs, then a cosy back section with book shelves and if it wasn’t enough you can find a cigar room and wine bar at the basement and outdoor seating is available at summertime as well.

I used to live in a small viallage and finished my secondary school in a country town - the one I mentioned before. My English teacher always encouraged me to write 'essays' on various topics. The title of one of these - I still remember - was "Those who live in a village never feel lonely". I no longer agree with what I used to suppose when I was sixteen, yet, I still believe there is something 'human' about villages. Most Hungarian villagers are owners of the houses they live in. Even if the roof is about to fall, there is a place for them to call home. It is highly unlikely to find a regular job in villages, therefore many commute. Villages, however, have a preserving force and provide a kind of unorganized social security that is not observed in towns.

The other day, when I was shopping for some toiletries I passed by the hair product section and saw the hair dyes on display. Grabbed a box of Garnier hair dye just out of whim and because it was on sale :P . The first and last time I dyed my hair was when I was 15.

I haven't used it yet. Not sure whether I really should when I think again about it. So I browsed about hair dyes. About how safe it is to topics about Hungarian women choice of hair colours. When I came upon a blog of another foreigner in Hungary writing about how she find it strange to see so many Hungarian women with red hair.

Prague or Budapest

I have seen a report on the TV the other day about Prague and Budapest tourism. The conclusion of the (Hungarian) report was that Prague is more successful in this field and Budapest faces serious challenges to convenience more tourist to visit.

Looking at the numbers in fact its true. There are much more tourists in Prague than in Budapest. But on the other hand its a real question to me if the aim is to make the downtown to be an endless line of tourists seeing only some navigation umbrellas held up in the mass?

In fact the tourists in Prague have occupied the downtown. As someone said in the report...if you want to see something Czech...you have to leave Prague.

The report referred to the disgusting habit of Hungarian restaurants in the downtown cheating tourists by giving an enormous bill after the meal. At the public transportation ticketing kiosks the staff dont speak English and the controllers act with a bad manner on board of the vehicles.

This is unfortunately true. The Public Transportation company is a mess, and not user friendly at all, though the network is quite good in the downtown. And some restaurants are sucks. I just dont understand why they still can be open...since everyone know exactly which places are like this. Its a shameful and annoying thing in my city.

They also mentioned that Budapest is still selling its past...we do not have a TODAY. I agree with this but I think Prague also sells its past. Prague has a middle ages atmosphere and Budapest is like the XIXth Century.

I think the point is that in both cities the mainstream tourism is the conservative one. There is a tour guide with an umbrella or/and with a speaker and you can listen to the bored standard speech following him/her like sheeps. If thats what we call tourism then I dont mind that Budapest is still not as full as Prague.

What I really miss from my city is the funny/creative ideas. Events, modern architectures (I dont mean skyscrapers but good, new ideas), artworks, events and events and events. We do not have to live in the XIXth Century...we can fullfill these wonderful ancient stones with a new life.

Introducing WINE GUIDE TO HUNGARY

The author's introduction:

WINE GUIDE TO HUNGARY is an independent blog. I am Hungarian and I’m writing in English because I realized that no one has been regularly reviewing Hungarian wines and writing about it since it’s become interesting again. I’ve been involved in drinking since 14 but Hungarian wines are worth to drink since the mid-nineties, more or less in association with the following names: Tokaj Hétszőlő (Tibor Kovács), Attila Gere, Bock and Tiffán. For sure there must have been others too but these were the wine lovers’ heroes whose’ influence is still unquestionable.

I try to keep pace with the growing number of producers and emerging wineries but please feel free to recommend anyone anytime. Finally, but not last, I am not a professional as you probably realize it, just a regular drinker with an annual consumption of appr. 200 bottles year and about 250 wines tasted.

An I’ve just started writing this. So please come back regularly if you liked what you’d seen so far. And thanks for your visit! You’ve already made my day!

Hungarian Internet surfers increasingly "modern" but bloggers remain an oddity

A pair of recent surveys of Internet usage in Hungary reveals that, while Hungarians are increasingly "modern" in their use of the web, the country lags badly in one key area. The most recent survey of Hungarian Internet use by researchers Szonda Ipsos and Gemius Hungary has found a growing use of blogs and international "Web 2.0" content-sharing sites, while other research puts Hungary last among 29 countries in terms of the percentage of bloggers among active Internet users.

Paprikás Krumpli

"Paprikás krumpli" ("PA-PRE-KASH KRUME-PLEE") is a paprika-based potato stew with a lot of diced potatoes, onion, tomato, bell peppers, Hungarian red paprika powder and some bacon or sliced spicy sausage. It is very popular dish in Hungary, often eaten for lunch or dinner and often prepared in bogrács (like the famous Hungarian goulash).

Lake Balaton

The waters of Central Europe's largest lake the Lake Balaton quickly warm up with the sun's rays. Its southern shore is a favourite with families because, while the northern shore deepens rapidly, here the water deepens gradually, providing wide stretches of safe beaches perfect for wading in. As you might expect, marinas all around the lake are at the service of sailing devotees and there are water ski runs, as well as pedal boats and windsurfing boards for rent.

In an effort to safeguard the cleanliness of the water, private motor yachts, motorboats and jet skis are not allowed on Lake Balaton. Apart from these, visitors will find virtually limitless opportunities to pursue all kinds of water passions on this huge lake with its surface of 590 square kilometres. All around the lake you are sure to find beaches, promenades, piers and marinas.

The sun is at its best here shining an average of more than 2,000 hours a year and yielding exceedingly pleasant water temperatures of 25 to 27 degrees Centigrade. There is plenty of opportunity for sun bathing on grassy or sandy beaches as well as enjoying the warm water with its soft sandy bottom.

The entire shore of Balaton is suitable for vineyards and thus it has developed into one of Hungary's significant wine-producing areas. On the north shore there are the Csopak-Füred and Tihany areas where the most famous wines of Badacsony are grown, the grey friar, 'szürkebarát'. The centre of the southern shore wine region is Boglár and Kőröshegy, where white and burgundy type grapes grow equally well, producing the basis of both white and red wines.

The Upper Balaton National Park (Balaton-felvidéki Nemzeti Park) is a guardian of environmental protection on the northern shore from Balatonszőlős to Kis-Balaton, managing a strip of land between 1 and 15 kilometres wide.

Vajdahunyad Castle

Vajdahunyad Castle, or Vajdahunyad vára, is a castle in City Park, Budapest, Hungary, that was built between 1896 and 1908, designed by Ignác Alpár. It is a copy in part of a castle in Transylvania, Romania, that is also called Vajdahunyad, though it is also a display of different architectural styles.

Originally it was made from cardboard and wood for the millennial exhibition in 1896 but it became so popular that it was rebuilt from stone and brick.
